What is AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR)?

The AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR) is the most comprehensive set of cost and usage data available from AWS. It contains detailed line items for each unique combination of AWS product, usage type, and operation that your AWS account uses.

What CUR Reports Include
  • Usage costs - Actual charges for AWS services used
  • Credits - Promotional credits, refunds, or adjustments
  • Taxes - Applicable taxes like GST, VAT, etc.
  • Reserved Instance amortization - RI costs spread over time
  • Savings Plans costs - Commitment-based discount costs
How to Generate AWS CUR Reports
Step-by-Step Guide
  1. Sign in to the AWS Billing Console
  2. Navigate to Data Exports in the left sidebar
  3. Click Create to set up a new CUR export
  4. Choose Standard data export and select CUR 2.0
  5. Configure the S3 bucket where reports will be delivered
  6. Select time granularity (Daily recommended for this tool)
  7. Enable resource IDs if you want per-resource cost tracking
Downloading CUR Files

Once configured, AWS delivers CUR files to your S3 bucket. You can download them directly or use the AWS Console.

  1. Go to your configured S3 bucket
  2. Navigate to the report prefix folder (e.g., cur-reports/)
  3. Find the date range folder you want to analyze
  4. Download the .csv or .csv.gz files
  5. If compressed, extract the .gz files before uploading here
